The number on threat to your business success – it’s not what you think it is…
Ok let’s be really honest here for a moment. How often does the really juicy project that would move your business forward big time move from one day to the next on your to do list? Or is it in the too hard basket already??? Have you ever found yourself busily doing the washing up, or some mundane task that you have been avoiding for weeks rather than making that phone call, writing that article or finishing that website design?
The biggest hinderance to your success is not your competitor and how good they are, it’s your own mindset. How confident, focused and clear you are about your business and how consistently you take action plays a bigger role in this than anything else. And often there are the gremlins that come out to play whenever you are just about to have a big breakthrough in your business growth.
Their names?: The Procrastination, Self Sabotage and Self Doubt gremlins. I know, because they come up for me just like they do for you. The only difference is, I don’t tolerate them for very long and I have the skills and the discipline to deal with them fast.

And here is how I do it.
(Even if you are NLP trained, please don’t underestimate the simplicity of these three powerful ways of creating a breakthrough. It’s implementation and action that makes all the difference. If you are not NLP trained or have only basic knowledge, this is priceless and can add thousands of dollars to your bottom line.)
Here is the principle that will empower you beyond measure when you are up against your own mind: It’s not the situation that is the problem, it’s how you perceive the situation. Change your perception and the task at hand changes.
1. Change your emotional state
A problem or challenge grows out of proportion if you feel anxious, frustrated or stressed. Look at the way you hold your body as you think of the task you want to tackle, are you slumped over? Make a conscious effort to change your emotional state to one of confidence, determination and add a sense of urgency for good measure. You know, it’s how you feel when do some of your best work. Notice how your self talk changes and how your perspective of the problem changes. And yes it is possible to change your emotional state at will. Here’s a starting point: Remember a time when you felt confident, what was it like?
2. Let go of wanting to answer all the how-to questions before committing to a task
This is what kills most big business dreams. You have a vision, you want to go for it and the little voice inside says “yes but how will you….?” you don’t find the answer and the whole dream collapses like a house of cards. People often do this without realising that the how-to question is just a minor detail and the power they gave the unanswered question is enormous. So instead of doing that, commit to your vision and take action to make it happen. Be so committed that failure is not an option and you suddenly become very resourceful in making it happen. There is a sequence and an order for processing What, Why and how questions that make all the difference between success and failure. Hint – the how and what if questions are last in line!
3. Test your assumptions
So often do we make assumptions without knowing it and limit ourselves in what we believe is possible for us. Sounds cliche but it’s true.When you feel yourself procrastinating ask yourself, what am I accepting as true here that needs to be questioned. Listen to the language you are using in your head and be alert to phrases such as “I can’t…” “I’ll never be able to…” “That will take me forever…”, ” I don’t know where to start…”, “I’m not … enough to …”. And ask yourself, is that really the truth?
Yes you can coach yourself out of all these limitations and it’s easy if you have a structured way to do it and the will to apply it. You don’t have to accept procrastination and self sabotage as a fact of life. Adopt a zero tolerance policy to it and you’ll be well equipped to break free from it whenever you want to.

Oh Yvonne, your words are so wise! I’ve been squaring up to these three ‘demons’ recently and your article really hit the nail on the head. I tackle the Emotional State demon by going for a swim or doing yoga (radical change in mental state!) It’s the ‘how to’ questions that get me every time. When I find myself wavering over whether i really CAN do it, I remind myself that every truly extraordinary thing I’ve ever done has come from a reckless leap of faith (starting up a new business, homebirthing my children, migrating to the other side of the world!) As for testing assumptions, that’s what my mentors are there for. However, none of these solutions are foolproof, so I’ll be listening in for some NLP tips too!
